Airstrip
  • Hawks Nest Airstrip; 5000'; paved. 24º09.3'N 75º31.2W.
Air Service
  • Service from New Bight Airport: Bahamasair, Cat Island Air, Le Air, Continental Gulfstream.
Anchorage
  • Hawks Nest Creek: narrow, high current, poor holding, insects.
  • Offshore of airstrip N of point; protection from SE to SW.
  • SE point near Port Howe on S Shore of Cat Island at offers good protection from cold fronts inside the outer reef. Mark on Down Island, owns property in this area and has explored and charted the depths of this anchorage which was used by British Ships during the colonial era and as a consequence had a good anchorage blasted out. Mark uses the following waypoints when using the anchorage. Outer Waypoint: 24º 08.59' N; 75º 21.35' W. Travel N to Waypoint: 24º 08.87' N; 75º 21.32' W. Take care not to go too far N as there is an inner reef. Then E to Waypoint: 24º 08.98' N; 75º 20.56' W. Water gets shallower as you proceed E. Depths in basin are 16' +. A secondary line on your anchor line to allow the bow to be turned into the swell will make the anchorage more comfortable. Down Island easily rides out the W winds of front passages here.
