Hurricane Dorian, 1 September 2019, as it makes landfall on Elbow Cay, Abacos as a Class 5 Hurricane with sustained winds of 185 mph and gusts to 220 mph on Sunday Afternoon (NOAA GOES-East).
Why Dorian so destructive
- Dorian, according to the US National Weather Service, was the most intense hurricane (in terms of maximum eye-wall wind speeds) of any hurricane to make landfall in the Atlantic Basin since reliable records have been recorded.
- When Dorian touched land at Elbow Cay, Abacos at ~0200 1 September it was traveling extremely slowly. It actually stalled over N-central Grand Bahama for > 24 hrs. It did not move away from the Bahamas until ~0200 4 September after inflicting 72 hours of punishment.
